Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday, declared the 1st African Youth Athletics Championship open, as he expressed optimism that the championship will unearth talents who will grow to become world champions.

Governor Uduaghan, speaking at the opening ceremony of AYAC tagged “Warri 2013” said he is particularly delighted that the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) had chosen Warri to host what he considered the most important competition in the calendar of the governing body for athletics in Africa.

H e said that the championship would provide for our youths, a way, not only to learn various significant life skills in a fun and enjoyable manner, it will also afford the youth the opportunity to positively dessipate their energies in an endeavour that has become a passion.

“This is why I am delighted that the CAA has given us the opportunity to contribute in shaping the future of hundreds of adolescents who will file out in honours at these championships.”

“I am pleased to know that the CAA is responding to Africa’s not too impressive showing at the London Olympics where we won only seven gold medals. With this championship which is designed to unearth and expose talents who may grow to become world beaters like the Kenelisa Bekeles, Haile Gebrseelassies. Deratu Tulus and Frankie Fredericks, I believe the future is surely bright for African athletics.”

He said Delta State is committed to developing the state through sports by positively engaging the youths because the power of sports helps to discipline the society and promote unity.

On his part, President of CAA who was represented by Moses Bance, said that it is in line with the innovative policy that the Confederation of Africa Athletics undertook in organising a continental event for youths that will continue at the continental level.

While expressing appreciation to Evangelist Solomon Ogba, President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria for hosting the youth championship, he said the International Association of Athletics Federation in its strategic plan decided to focus on the return of athletics in schools.

Earlier, while welcoming athletes and officials to Warri, the Head, Local Organizing Committee and chairman, Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Amaju Pinnick said that the championship was to lay the foundation for the birth of tomorrow’s stars, who will continue to make Africa relevant at major international games and championships.
