Civil Societies allege,
We were not given room to inspect materials * We have been Blackout by DSIEC * It seems DSIEC is working for someone CIVIL societies in Delta State have alleged that the
Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC ahead of Saturday’s local government polls is working for Gov Okowa from all indications. The group accused DSIEC of not giving a
level play group. According to vanguard, the executive director, Value Rebirth and Empowerment Initiative, VREI,
Pastor Edewor Egedegbe wondered why the electoral body did not make public the call for civil societies be selected as observers and monitors of the election, adding that, “this
would question the credibility of the election.” Egedegbe whose group participated as an observer in the Delta state 2014 council elections also conducted by DSIEC, said: “Not
much was and is heard about the January 6 election in relationship with DSIEC and the civil societies. “As watchdogs of the society, we weren’t given a fare share in the activities of DSIEC ahead of the election as observers and we condemn this act of blackout.” He noted that during the 2014 elections,
DSIEC made public the call for civil societies to participate in the electionary process through screening of intending groups
with those selected shortlisted for the general public. Questioning the credibility of the election from primaries to campaigns and post election period, Egedegbe said: “As civil societies who act as watchdog of the society, we hope DSIEC
would do something close to a free and fair election because without proper observation of the elections, the credibility of the election comes to questioning.
