Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, from Ondo North Senatorial District is the governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state. The former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General in the state and a former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) wants to be the next Governor of the state. During an interview session with Associate Editor, BANKOLE MAKINDE, in Akure, he spoke on why his party picked him as flag bearer and the strategy he will use to assume the exalted position, among other sundry issues.
WHAT is the meaning of your AKETI campaign slogan?
Aketi is an acronym which has become a trademark that has been attached to me as an individual and for the purpose of this campaign; people have now spread it through all the nooks and crannies of this state. A stands for Agriculture, K is for Knowledge, E is for Education, T is for Technology and the I is for Infrastructural development. The acronym has been keyed into the programmes that we want to run in Ondo State.
What programmes or strategies do you think can make the people in Ondo State prefer you to the incumbent governor of the state, Governor Olusegun Mimiko?
Go and look at what Oshiomhole did in Edo State to the extent that people voted for him and to the extent that the Federal Government–backed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state could not even muster 25 per cent of the total votes in the state. What I am saying in essence is that the issue trancends whether Mimiko is formidable or not. It is about whether he has delivered to the people of Ondo State or not. Let me also tell you that the people of Ondo State are wise. No governor has ever come to this state to rule twice and Mimiko himself, in an interview he granted the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), told the whole world that shame was awaiting anyone that tries to impose himself on the people of Ondo State. He said so but probably without taking cognisance of the fact of the wise saying that the power of life and death is in the tongue. So, what we are saying is that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as a very formidable political
party, successfully dislodged former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala as the helmsman in Oyo State and with the entrenchment of former Governor Gbenga Daniel in Ogun State, the ACN dethroned him just as the party did to Olagunsoye Oyinlola in Osun State and Segun Oni in Ekiti State. So, what we are saying in essence is that Mimiko, no matter how entrenched he might think he is, the people on Ondo State, in conjunction with the platform of ACN, will dislodge him out of this state
